Web Designer vs. Web Developer

What's the difference between a web designer and a web developer, and which one does your project need?

The terms are often used interchangeably, but web designers and web developers solve different problems. Knowing the difference helps you plan your project and team.

What a web designer does

A web designer decides how a website looks, feels and works for the people using it. That includes user research, information architecture, wireframes, visual design, typography, colour and interaction design.

  • UX research and user journeys
  • Wireframes and prototypes
  • Visual design and design systems
  • Tools like Figma and Adobe Creative Cloud

What a web developer does

A web developer turns designs into working software. Front-end developers build what runs in the browser; back-end developers build the servers, databases and APIs behind it. Full-stack developers do both.

  • HTML, CSS and JavaScript/TypeScript
  • Frameworks such as React and Next.js
  • APIs, databases and hosting
  • Performance, security and accessibility

Which do you need?

Most projects need both. A beautiful design that's hard to build, or solid code with a confusing interface, both lead to disappointing results. The best outcomes come when designers and developers work together from the start, so ideas are tested early and nothing is lost in handover.

At 9Falcons, our designers and engineers work as one team, from first sketch to launch and beyond.
